"The ARC is a major event in the sailing community and when we were invited to participate we felt it would be a great opportunity to document it in an episode of the Distant Shores sailing TV series," says Sheryl. "Paul and I were already planning to do a transatlantic passage in December for the show so were able to adjust our filming schedule so that we could do it with the ARC a couple of weeks earlier."

The Shards are currently filming 13 new episodes for Season 9 of the Distant Shores sailing adventure travel TV series that is broadcast in 24 languages worldwide on Travel Channel, WealthTV, and Travel and Escape Channel. The TV series celebrates the sailing lifestyle and features the world's best sailing and waterfront destinations.

This year's voyage began in England from where the couple sailed to the north coast of France and spent the summer travelling south through the networks of inland waterways all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. From Port St. Louis near Marseilles they sailed west along the coast of France, then Spain documenting their travels and are currently in Gibraltar. On Sunday, weather permitting, they will sail to Rabat in Morocco to film episode 109 before sailing on to the Canary Islands to join the ARC.

Distant Shores Season 9 - 2012 Voyage

French Canals, Western Mediterranean, Transatlantic to the Caribbean

Paul and Sheryl Shard, the fun-loving presenters of the travel documentary television series, Distant Shores, are on a sailing voyage that covers diverse destinations on many waterways and seas this year.

Filming episodes #105-117, the Shards travel aboard their Southerly 49 sailboat, Distant Shores II, after beginning their 2012 voyage in May in Chichester Harbour on the south coast of England. From there the couple cross the English Channel to Le Harve on the north coast of France and travel up the Seine River to Paris.

After exploring this famous city from a boater's perspective, the couple continue south through the network of small waterways and canals of France all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

"Most sailboats in our size range can't fit through the small canals in France due to their deep draft but the Southerly 49 has a variable-draft swing keel that allows us to reduce our draft to less than a metre if necessary," says Sheryl. "It will be a challenging trip but a special opportunity to explore the heartland of France aboard a sailboat."

Reaching the Mediterranean coast of France near Marseilles at the end of the summer, the Shards and Distant Shores II head west along the coasts of France and Spain exploring waterfront destinations all the way to Gibraltar, one of the Pillars of Hercules, at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea.

Next stop is Morocco where they sail down the Atlantic Coast visiting ports such as Casablanca and Rabat as well as travel inland.

Then it's offshore to explore the Canary Islands in November where preparations begin for a transatlantic passage in December. The voyage concludes in the Caribbean with Christmas celebrations in St. Martin/Sint Maarten.

"This year's voyage covers a lot of miles, a variety of diverse destinations and cultures, as well as a contrast of water routes from small inland waterways, the enchantment of the Mediterranean Sea, and the high seas adventure of an ocean crossing that bridges continents," says Paul. "We promise that Season 9 will be one of the most breath-taking and unusual seasons of the Distant Shores travel TV series."
